Wandering Duck offers a unique canal boat experience for individuals and small groups.
There are 2,200 miles of inland waterways in the UK. Britain’s canals were a key ingredient in kick-starting the industrial revolution, and Manchester was the worlds first industrialised city.
The canals are an important part of our industrial heritage, but they also wind through a fantastic blend of pleasant green landscapes, quaint English villages and cities.
Wandering Duck are proud to provide a unique link between Manchester, one of the UK’s most visited cities, and the Peak District, the country’s first National Park.
Wandering Duck is an owner operated business. Owners Lee and Roberta are passionate about providing our guests with an authentic experience. 35,000 people live on their boats in the UK, and we allow your customers a way into this unique world. On our tours we like to get people involved; working locks, steering the boat, mooring up, even making a brew. But another important element is interacting with the locals; keeping a bridge open for another boat, chatting with live-aboard boaters as you work the locks together.
We appreciate that many people are trying to see as much as possible on their UK or European tour. Traditionally, due to the pace of canal boats, holiday-makers have opted for week long holidays on the canal. However, for most Wandering Duck guests the experience is simply one element of a much larger trip. For this reason Wandering Duck offer a choice of 2 and 3 Night Tours as well as our new Day Tours .
Unusually, our tours are all one-way. This has two advantages: there is no need to cover the same ground twice (as is the case for most canal boat tours and boat hires), and your customers get to appreciate the canals as a method of transport. This makes the experience a part of their journey as they tour around the country.
Whilst our website is geared towards individual bookings, we can be much more flexible when it comes to working with the travel trade. Let us help you with the logistics to our boat, and onward to your next destination.
Tours can also be tailored to specific interests. From creative elements such as photography or poetry workshops, to walking, canoeing and mountain biking, together let us create the perfect trip for your customer base.
Wandering Duck’s 69ft narrowboat can accommodate up to 8 guests. For groups of up to 16 people it’s possible to run one trip with up to 8 from Point A to Point B, then from Point B to Point A with the other half of the group. Since we are within close proximity of Manchester and the Peak District National Park, there are a wealth of walking tours, city sights, and outdoor activities that can be arranged for the other half of your group.
We work with Viator, STA Travel, Great British Trips, and other tour operators and agents. If you’re planning future tour itineraries we’d be happy to work with you to fit around your schedule.
We work with social groups and outdoor activity providers including Social Circle, Spice UK, and Large Outdoors to provide a unique tailored weekend away on the canals. If you run a similar organisation talk to us about what we can do for your members.
