FAQ

Where are you Based?

Our mooring is at Bugsworth Basin in Derbyshire on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. Bugsworth Basin is a scheduled ancient monument as this was once the biggest inland working port in the country.

Where exactly do the trips Start and Finish?

We run various trips around Manchester, Derbyshire and Cheshire. We travel very slowly (around 3mph) and as the trips are relatively short, we do them one-way to avoid doubling back on yourself. We believe this unique way of running the trips makes them the best short canal breaks that exist. All of our start and finish points are within walking distance of train stations. Check the pre-departure section of each tour page for detailed instructions of how to get to and from your tour. Detailed instructions are also emailed to you in your booking confirmation.

Do you provide Car Parking facilities?

There is street parking at all of our start and finishing points (free of charge) with the exception of Manchester City Centre. In Manchester the nearest car park would be 75 Dale Street, though many other options are available on Parkopedia.

Do you allow Children?

Yes, we do allow Children on Private Charter bookings, but not on our Scheduled Tours. Life jackets are provided and are compulsory for young children and those who are not confident swimmers. Our boat is not suitable for children under 2 yrs as there is no space for a cot on the boat.

Do you allow Dogs?

Sorry, but No.
There is a local dog kennels at Whaley Bridge. They are a 15 minute walk from Whaley Bridge train station, so would be suitable for anyone starting their trip in the Peak District. They charge £11 per day. To check availability please contact Kathy or John Bailey on 01663 732782. Please tell them that you are booking a Wandering Duck trip. Their address is: Clare Cottage, 12 Stoneheads, Whaley Bridge. SK23 7BB.

Do I need to bring a Sleeping Bag?

No. We supply pillows and nice comfy duvets so you can be sure of a cozy nights sleep. We do suggest that you bring a towel if you would like to make use of our hot showers.

Are there Power Sockets on the boat?

We have a 240v power supply on the boat, but this is only suitable for charging devices such as mobile phones and laptops. Unfortunately high power items such as hairdryers will not work on the boat (sorry!)

How much Luggage can I bring?;

Space is very limited on the boat so we do ask that you just bring what you need for the two night trip. Each guest will get a shelf within a wardrobe in their cabin (approx 35cm H by 45cm W by 45cm D). In addition there is a small amount of hanging space which is shared between all 8 guests. We would not recommend a hard case as you will not fit this in the wardrobe space available. If you are on an extended trip and you are unable to store luggage with your previous nights accommodation provider, (for example, if you arrive from London and are travelling on to Manchester) please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate your luggage on the boat.

How Big are the Beds?

Our beds are 1.95 metres (6ft, 4in) long and 0.60 metres (2ft) wide. They’re reasonably narrow bunk beds, but the same length as a normal single or double bed. We provide all bedding.

Can I bring Alcohol on the boat?

We decided to be a licensed boat due to the lack of space. We find that by providing the alcohol ourselves it is easier to manage the space on the boat and all of your storage space can be used for your clothes. You will find the prices of our honesty bar drinks generally cheaper than pub prices.

I’m coming on my own, who else will be on the Trip?

A huge range of people come on our Scheduled Tours. Many are in their 20′s/30′s, but there is no upper age limit, and in fact we have had people in their 70′s on trips! We hope that the mix of people, nationalities, and backgrounds provides for a more interesting and unique experience.

Is there a Female-Only cabin?

There are two cabins each with four bunks. We will always try to keep people together if they are travelling together. However, if you specify on the booking form that you would prefer to stay in a female only cabin then we will do our best to make sure this happens. Due to different peoples preferences and the ratio of female to male guests we are unable to guarantee this.
